Can you please explain to me what happened in the classical music of the romantic mvmt. today?

I how I understand progress towards (including) the romantics, but does not understand how this became the atonal "style, and what is the meaning of" atonal "Is. For example, the way I see it, Beethoven was more or less the first (at least, recognized by) the release of emotions and focus about extracting an emotional listener. Whereas before, the music seems to be more a form of entertainment and more focused on skills of the composer to the listener. Beethoven did it all the more human and empowerment of the listener. Now, I have no formal study of the history of music, so please do not grill me if my point of view what is taught. It's just my perception. By Therefore, I am curious, in this line of thinking, how can we explain the change in the contemporary mvmt? What are the documents that shed water reveal what you have to say?
